One On One With...

What are your goals for 2010?
Top of the podium, Gold

How did you get into your sport (i.e. other Olympians in family?)
My parents started me skiing when I was 3; I started ski-cross after a ski company approached me to ski for them in 2004.

Describe a bit about your hometown, about how you got started there in your sport.
My hometown is a small forest industry town in the middle of BC. Every weekend in the winter was spent out on the local Mountain (troll resort). The first thing I wanted to be when I grew up was a ski racer.

How were you supported by your community growing up there?
There is a number of very strong youth sport programs and motivated parents in the community. I was lucky enough to be apart of a couple of these. Everyone was behind my skiing from the beginning wishing me luck and wanting me to succeed.

What is it about your hometown that inspired you in your sport?
The ability to compete at a high level with limited resources.

How were you impacted by where you grew up?
A strong work ethic!

How would you describe yourself?
Highly motivated and positive individual, with a good sense of humor.

What is one of the biggest challenges you've faced in reaching your goals in this sport?
The biggest challenge is balancing a fulltime job and time to get all my training in during the off-season. (Financial support)

What do you consider of one of your biggest accomplishments to date?
12th place at the 2007 World championships

What other interests do you have outside your sport?
Interests outside of my sport are mainly other sports to stay in shape and have fun in the outdoors, mountain biking, golf, surfing, and if I have anytime left over I try to go fly-fishing and camping.

Perhaps a quote from a mentor about their chances in 2010 or a description of what they're like as people.

"I have known Brian for a very long time, I've watched him throughout his career and he's really come into his own. A compassionate teammate and fierce competitor, Brian is always the man you turn to when you need a smile or a laugh. His positive nature is infectious!" Andrew Squires - Director of Marketing and Supplier Services.
