One On One With...

What are your goals for 2010?
An Olympic gold in ski cross

How did you get into your sport (i.e. other Olympians in family?)
My background is in alpine skiing, suffered a major knee injury that forced me into retirement from the Canadian alpine ski team. My passion for skiing continued as I studied and played varsity soccer at university. Then ski cross was introduced as a mainstream sport and I thought it would be a perfect fit. An element of alpine skiing crossed with a tactical approach of racing other competitors in the same heat.

Describe a bit about your hometown, about how you got started there in your sport.
North Bay is a beautiful city in the summer, warm weather with lots of lakes to enjoy the water and cool down. Cold and snowy in the winter. NB was once a crazed ski town. The North Bay Ski Racing Club rivalled minor hockey in popularity and I chose the opportunity to ski race over playing hockey as a youngster. There were several great mentors at higher levels that I could emulate and learn from like Kate Pace Lindsay.

How were you supported by your community growing up?
The community used to have a passion for skiing until the best mountain in northern Ontario closed, (mount Antoine in Mattawa). They always provided me great training and a safe environment to practice my skills.

What is it about your hometown that inspired you in your sport?
Growing up in Northern Ontario always meant you were an underdog; the challenge to be the best is what inspires me.

How were you impacted by where you grew up?
Kate Pace Lindsay impacted me because she is from North Bay, and she proved nothing is impossible by winning the world alpine championship downhill with a broken wrist.

How would you describe yourself?
Selfish, Narrow-minded, Determined / dedicated.

What is one of the biggest challenges you've faced in reaching your goals in this sport?
Money, not that I am looking for money like a pro athlete because I compete for the love of sport but when you can not afford proper nutrition or the ability to support a family it is near impossible to be competitive.

What do you consider of one of your biggest accomplishments to date?
My Bachelors of Arts, Bachelor of Education degrees & of course my Fiancée.

What other interests do you have outside your sport?
Education- teaching and leading your younger generation to lead healthy prosperous lives.
