One On One With...
What are your goals for 2010?
Win a Gold Medal and represent the country of Canada in the inaugural running of Ski Cross on our home turf. I look forward to being an ambassador for my sport, growing the fan base while
attracting the next generation of ski cross racers.
How did you get into your sport (i.e. other Olympians in family?)
My father left Sudbury, ON in 1955 after his last year of Junior A Hockey in Trois Rivieres to skate for the University of Denver Pioneers. I was born with his athletic talent and learned
to ski, skate, and ride a bike at two and half years old. My ski racing career began shortly after when I joined Ski Club Vail at 5 years old. I made the switch to Ski Cross at the age of 18.
Describe a bit about your hometown, about how you got started there in your sport.
Skiing is everything in Vail. I started out by cruising around the mountain with my friends and my first instructor Jebbie. All I did was ski. I loved to go fast, so the obvious next move was
racing.
How were you supported by your community growing up?
The community was very supportive and played a crucial part in developing me as a person and skier.
What is it about your hometown that inspired you in your sport?
Growing up in Vail gave me a great playground to develop my athletic ability. I grew up watching the worlds best ski racers come through town every year for the World Cup Ski races. Watching
these athletes fueled my dreams of becoming a world-class competitor.
How would you describe yourself?
I like to keep to myself; I don't care for a ton of fanfare. I love to learn new things. I am a pretty quiet person, I'd rather let others take the spotlight. I am kind, caring, thoughtful, and
insightful. I am dedicated, but most of all I am a true competitor. Basically, I'm a competitive introvert.
What do you consider of one of your biggest accomplishments to date?
The pinnacle moment of my career was standing on the top step of the podium with my first World Cup gold medal at home on the Olympic track last February. It was then I realized that all my hard
work and perseverance was paying off. This victory confirmed that I was on the right path to reach my goal of Olympic Gold in 2010.
What other interests do you have outside your sport?
When I am not in the gym or on the snow training, you'll most likely find me on the golf course. Also, I am a professional downhill mountain bike racer.
A quote from a mentor about their chances in 2010 or a description of what they're like as people.
"Built for ski cross Del has a ton of natural talent, over time he has steadily developed his focus and is amassing the skis he needs to take him to the top of his game. Everything is in line for
2010" - Eric Archer, Head Coach of the Canadian Ski Cross Team
